My Favorite Photographer & Photography Websites

I am a self taught photographer. Kind of. While I didn't go to a photography school per say, I have had the luxury of learning photography from the best teachers in the world. And...you do as well. Whenever anyone ask me where I learned photography (I still consider myself a learner of course) I always just say "the internet." That is a quick broad answer and I was thinking maybe I should just make a page that list all of my favorite photographers websites, blogs, and creative communities. So over the course of the last three years or so I believe I have found the best sites there are to chose from. Below are the websites that I have learned and continue to learn the most from. Camera techniques, lighting, photoshop tutorials, behind the scenes videos, and simply just really awesome, creative, and  inspiring people.

Photography & Creative Communities, blogs, videos, and forums.

Why I like it: If you are into photography and you are NOT watching these web episodes then I don't know what you are doing with your life. Each episode follows the life of successful photographers and showcases their work, how they got started, mistakes they have made and even goes on location with them to shoots which gives awesome perspective of their techniques and whatnot.

They also offer special episodes on lighting, gear, and just about anything at all possible you would want to know about photography.

Fstoppers.com
Why I like it: These guys are the "Behind the Scene" video kings. They have very unique post in many different styles and ideas behind photography. Fstoppers is also very much into video production, so if still and motion photography is your thing then you will love fstoppers.com.

Forums - the forum commnity on fstoppers is great as well. There are a ton of great photographers and creative people on their forums and they are very active as well.

Chase Jarvis
Why I like it: Chase's blog is mixed with inspiration and knowledge. The blog is more of a source for creative people and not just so much photographers. If you get a chance, check out his show "ChaseJarvisLIVE" in which he interviews photographers and film makers on their processes and techniques as well as their journey to where they are now.

Scott Kelby
Why I like it: Kelby is a photoshop master....as in he is the guy behind Photoshop World, Photoshop User magazine, and just probably the most knowledgable photographer when it comes to creative lighting and photoshop post production.

Don't Miss: Guest Blog Wednesdays! I have discovered some of my favorite photographers through this blog.

I Shoot Shows
Why I like it: If you are into concert photography this is really the BEST site to learn from. Great tutorials and tips on technique as well as gear. Even if you aren't into shooting concerts, it is a really fun website that is filled with a ton of great info.

A Photo Editor
Why I like it: GREAT photographer interviews and insights from artist and dealing with modern business. This blog is edited by a former Director of Photography for Men's Journal and Outdoor world. If you aren't into commercial and editorial photography and business than this is probably one you won't get into as much.

My Favorite Photographers
this is a list of photographers that inspire me. Some are friends and some are just random finds and their work makes me want to become a photographer.

Awesome commercial photographer and a San Diego resident. Rob shoots covers for Dime Magazine and has the likes of LaDainian Tomlinson and Blake Griffin in his portfolio. He has a great style and an amazing way to portray people's character in one simple image.

Another great commercial photographer who I believe has every celebrity on the face of the earth in his portfolio. Not only do I really love his eye and style, but he is constantly teaching other photographers through Kelbytraining.com seminars or through guest spots on Framedshow.com

Very inspring photographer. His work is odd and different and I love it.

Sean Flanigan
A great photojournalist wedding photographer (a real photojournalist, not like the 99% of wedding photographer that think they are). You can really feel the moment in each of his images.

Brian Bielmann
Brian is a surf photographer from Hawaii. While I do not surf and generally scared to go deeper than my ankles into the ocean, Brian's images of that world are like none other. There are tons of surf photographers and surf images, but Brian's images make you stop and wonder about a world that you have never witnessed before. Make sure to check out the "underwater" gallery and black/white images of surfers duck diving under the waves.

Adam Elmakias
My hands down favorite concert and music photographer. (also from San Diego) His work is catches the intensity of a live show and his use of off camera lighting at live concerts is simply amazing...some images are jaw dropping, especially if you have shot in the same venues and wonder how on earth his eye and composition is so great.

Sam Hurd

Portrait work is like no other and he shares his photography ideas and techinque on his blog. Check out his portrait of George Clooney.

Doug Hac
Los Angeles based photographer. I had the pleasure of meeting Doug for a few brief seconds while I was shooting the band Slightly Stoopid and he was on tour as the photographer for Shwayze and documented their Seedless Summer Tour in 2011. Beyond his unique look into the world of professional musicians he recently shot the top 50 directors and actors for the ten year celebrations of Arclight.

Beki Dawn Photography
Beki is a wedding and portrait photographer from San Diego. I don't even remember where I stumbled across her work for the first time, but I am glad I did. Her ability to get amazing colors in her images and her unique composition with subjects pretty much haunts me. In a good way!

Isabel Furie
Isabel is a good friend although I have never personally ever met her. We kind of started out our journey into photography around the same time. My wife and her were friends through a parenting forum and somewhere down the line we started talking about photography. It has been fun watching our styles develop together and sharing technique and gear ideas. A few of the photographers on this list came from "Oh check out this guy's stuff" emails. Her composition and style is very welcoming. You really get that voyeurs view into not only her life, but the life of her clients as well. Make sure to check out her blog for she is one of the few photographers that write as well as they produce images. (very un-like trying to read my writing...)
